Main Reef Road to be closed for repairs

At the time of publication, it was not clear when Main Reef Road will be closed and for how long.

The old thoroughfare to Benoni was abuzz with activity on Tuesday morning as work got underway to prepare the road to be used as an alternative route for motorists.

The Herald understands traffic will be diverted along this road until a section of Main Reef Road is fixed following the development of another large sinkhole near Plastic City informal settlement.

At the time of publication, it was not clear when Main Reef Road will be closed and for how long.

Comment was requested from the City of Ekurhuleni on Tuesday, but the municipality did not immediately reply to the Herald’s request.

Brandon Pretorius, DA councillor for Ward 97 in Brakpan, was on site at the old road on Tuesday and told the Herald he welcomes the closure of Main Reef Road for proper repairs to be conducted.

He is, however, concerned about motorists having to use the old road.

“I do note the efforts made by the roads department to ensure the road is as usable and safe as possible but still need to question whether this is truly a viable option,” he said.

“The roads department has done what they can by cleaning the road and repairing potholes, but due to the municipality’s total neglect of the area over the past years, the road is deemed unsafe if one considers the surrounding area and the activities taking place.”

Pretorius added that he has requested an urgent meeting with the Brakpan customer relations manager and all other relevant departments to ensure everyone is on board in ensuring the old road and surrounding area is cleaned and repaired.
