Traffic lights are a nightmare at these intersections

There is no traffic light filter at the Makro traffic light, so people have to wait and wait until the road is clear.

M du Toit, estate manager of Alan Woodrow Park III Retirement Village in Dalpark, writes:

There is a big problem with the traffic light system at all the intersections around our retirement village.

As estate manager of this village I have a concern for the residents of our village using these roads, which they have to use as there are no alternative roads to get to Mall@Carnival and Makro.

It is dangerous and accidents often happen at every intersection.

There is no synchronisation of how many cars are allowed through or can turn.

The traffic light stays green long enough for about two to three vehicles to turn and the traffic builds up, resulting in drivers getting impatient.

There is no traffic light filter at the Makro traffic light, so people have to wait and wait until the road is clear.

Most of the time the traffic light turns red again and one waits again, sometimes one vehicle is allowed to turn.

There is a traffic filter attached to the traffic light on one side, but not on the opposite roadside where it is clear there should have been one, but perhaps forgotten?

I intend to ask the Ekurhuleni department that controls the installation of traffic lights to please investigate this complaint as a matter of urgency.

Editor’s note:

Comment was requested from the City of Ekurhuleni and the following response was received from Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, divisional head: Communication and Media Relations:

“As the programming of traffic signals and the number of phases (i.e. only a green phase per approach or whether exclusive green arrows are needed for certain right turning movements) are determined scientifically, the roads and stormwater department will conduct an investigation to determine if the intersection of Heidelberg Road (R23) and Wild Olive Street requires signal phasing/programme update.

“The investigation will be conducted within two weeks after the school holiday and if the changes are warranted, the changes will be effected the week thereafter.”
