Hand in your illegal or unwanted firearms

The amnesty provides firearm owners with the opportunity to hand in illegal, unlicensed and unwanted firearms.

A new firearm amnesty for a period of six months commenced at the beginning of August and will end on January 31 next year.

Brakpan police are urging people to take advantage of this period to hand in those firearms and ammunition for either destruction or renewal of a competency certificate and a valid licence.

It must be stressed that no indemnity will be granted for firearms used to commit any crime.

All firearms that have been handed in will undergo ballistic testing to ensure they have not been used in the commission of any crime before they can be considered for destruction.

Who qualifies for the amnesty?

• If you are in possession of a firearm for which you don’t have a licence, you can hand in the firearm.

• If you have a white card firearm licence which has expired, you can hand in the firearm at the police station and reapply for that firearm’s licence.

Residents are advised to contact the Brakpan SAPS Firearm Office so the process can be explained in detail and an appointment scheduled.

Due to Covid-19 regulations, applicants will be seen strictly by appointment.

Residents are also encouraged not to wait until the last minute as it will be difficult to process large numbers of applications in a short period of time.

The Brakpan Firearm Office can be contacted on 011 744 7162/52/49.
