Weekend crime round-up

Weekend crime in Brakpan.

The move to lockdown level two saw an increase in the number of crimes committed in Brakpan and the following incidents were reported to local police:

Friday – Two security guards deployed to guard cables along a stretch of the N17 highway near Denne Road were held up by two gunmen.

The guards were confronted by the pair around 2.30am, who robbed them of their personal belongings and tied them up.

One of the gunmen kept a watch over the guards while the other got to work cutting the cables.

Cables valued at R3 050 were stolen.

* Batteries were stolen from two trucks parked at an address along Jones Avenue.

A generator pump was also taken from the premises.

* A courier driver was held at gunpoint by two men while delivering a parcel at an address along Shepstone Street in Brenthurst at 9.30am.

The robbers, who were travelling in a white Volkswagen, removed 16 parcels from the driver’s vehicle and sped off.

*A motorist was hijacked by bogus police officers along Heidelberg Road (R23) near Withok Estates at about 1.20pm.

The victim was travelling in his company vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux bakkie, when the occupants of a white Volkswagen T-Cross indicated he should pull over.

The vehicle was fitted with blue lights and the victim believed he was being stopped by police.

The Volkswagen stopped in front of him and another vehicle parked behind him.

The victim found himself surrounded by a group of men, who climbed into the bakkie and covered his face with a jacket.

He was assaulted and instructed to lie down and the men drove him to an unknown location where he was forced into another vehicle.

At least one of the hijackers was armed with a gun.

The victim was robbed of his company laptop, cellphone and wallet and forced to tell the hijackers the pin number for his bank cards and mobile banking app.

He was then driven to an area in Nigel and let go.

* Employees and customers at a business along Vlakfontein Road in Withok Estates were robbed by a gang of six men.

The incident took place around 6pm and the robbers fled with cellphones and R400 cash.

* A home in Farquharson Road, Rand Collieries, was burgled of a TV, cellphones and shoes.

* A woman was robbed of her bag by two men at 6.30pm.

The victim was walking along Station Road when she was confronted by the men and threatened with a knife.

The robbers ran off with her bag which contained two computer tablets, textbooks and other valuables.

Saturday – A cellphone and a TV were stolen from a residence in Farquharson Road, Sonneveld.

* The driver of a white Volkswagen Polo was hijacked in the driveway of his Dalpark home.

The victim arrived at his Kiepersol Crescent residence around 8pm and sat in his car while talking to a friend on his cellphone.

While on the call, he was startled by a man knocking at his window.

When he opened the door, he was pulled from the car and forced into the backseat.The hijacker got into the driver’s seat and a second man joined the victim in the back.

This hijacker was armed with a gun and struck the victim on the head.

The victim was searched and robbed of his cellphone and bank card. He was dropped off in Vosloorus.

* Various household goods including TVs and clothes were stolen during a break-in at a home along Hamilton Avenue.

* A 71-year-old woman was robbed by two women inside a retail store in the CBD.

The victim was shopping at about 1pm when the pair approached her.

One of them stood in front of her and the other behind her. They told her not to scream and the victim was prodded in the back with a sharp object by the woman standing behind her.

They used a gel-like substance to remove the victim’s rings from her fingers.

The robbers also took the victim’s handbag which contained bank cards and personal documents.

An amount of R4 000 was later withdrawn from the victim’s bank account.

* A UK citizen was robbed of his cellphone, UK driver’s licence, cash in rands and pounds and other items of value while stationary in traffic at the Heidelberg and New Kleinfontein roads intersection in Leachville.

A thief opened a rear door of the car and grabbed the goods from the back seat.T

he incident took place at around 2.10pm.

Sunday – No priority cases were reported at the time of publication.
