Weekend crime round-up

A business in Denne Road, Rand Collieries, was burgled of goods valued at R100 000.

According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

Friday – Two robbers made off with goods from a delivery vehicle after holding the driver at gunpoint.

The incident took place at Mall@Carnival around 11am.

The driver had parked the vehicle and was returning with a trolley in which to transport the goods when he was confronted by the pair. They fled with three boxes, the contents of which have not been disclosed.

* The driver of a white Toyota Hilux Legend 50 was hijacked along Glamorgan Avenue in Dalview.

The man and his girlfriend were en route to a family member’s house around 6.30pm when they were instructed to pull over by four men travelling in a white vehicle (possibly a Volkswagen Polo).

While it is not indicated in the police report, it is believed the hijackers were masquerading as law enforcers.

After stopping, the driver was approached by one of the men who asked him for money and accused him of driving under the influence.

The driver was then threatened at gunpoint and pulled into the backseat of the bakkie. His girlfriend was instructed to cover her eyes.

Three of the men climbed into the bakkie and drove off with the couple, while the other followed in the white car.

They were driven to a secluded area and told to get out of the bakkie. Both were forced to lie on the ground and the driver’s hands were tied with his girlfriend’s shoelaces.

The hijackers spent about an hour stripping the vehicle, no doubt in search of a tracking device, and then left with both vehicles.

The woman told police she saw another vehicle escorting them which she believed was a police vehicle.

The hijackers took the couple’s cellphones but left the driver’s house keys and driver’s licence, and the woman’s handbag.

The woman untied her boyfriend’s hands and they set off in search of help.

They were able to raise the alarm after meeting two men, one of whom let them use his cellphone to call for help.
