Case against animal abuse accused provisionally withdrawn

The dog suffered as many as 60 stab wounds and was decapitated.

The case against a young Brakpan man accused of brutally mutilating a family pet has been provisionally withdrawn.

The incident, which took place at a residence along Wenden Avenue on January 29, last year, spurred outrage among local animal lovers, who staged a protest outside the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court.

The man, who was 19 years old at the time, was apprehended by Brakpan SPCA staff members shortly after the incident and taken to the Brakpan Police Station where he was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

He is alleged to have taken the little Chihuahua-type dog, which belonged to family members, onto the roof of the house where he stabbed it and then threw its lifeless body on the ground in the yard.

The dog suffered as many as 60 stab wounds and was decapitated.

Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, confirmed the case has been provisionally withdrawn and that the man has been ordered to attend a diversion programme.

“Accompanied by his mother, he attends weekly sessions as an outpatient at a local addiction rehabilitation centre,” she added.
