Boerewors battle heats up

Over 1 000 boerewors-experts will battle it out, boasting more than 1 150 unique boerewors recipes, in the regional rounds of the 2013 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition.

The nerve-wracking regional clashes take place on August 10, 17 and 24, at selected locations countrywide.

Regional round participants need to go all out to impress the judges with their boerewors-making and -cooking skills as only the first place winners of each of the 88 regional rounds will go on to battle it out against their provincial counterparts in 10 provincial rounds that take place on Saturday, 14 September.

Shoprite Brakpan is hosting the regional round tomorrow (Saturday), at the store on the corner of Kitzinger Avenue and Park Street.

Fouteen contestants will take on the challenge and the event starts at 9am.

Between the sizzling fires and enticing boerewors smells, visitors will be entertained by well-known artist Adriaan van der Merwe, who will also be MC for the day.

Members of the public can take part in various lucky draws throughout the course of the event, while jumping castles and games will keep the little ones entertained.

An independent judging panel, selected and trained by the South African Chefs Association (SACA), will judge each regional round, where prospective boerewors champions have to braai 1kg of their own-recipe boerewors, that will be judged raw and cooked.
