DA petitions Ekurhuleni to take urgent action against illegal mining in Brakpan

The petition comes after another road failure along Main Reef Road as a result of illegal mining activities.

The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni is concerned with the lack of action taken by the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) with regards to the criminal activities by illegal miners in Brakpan.

Subsequently, the DA, on behalf of the residents of Brakpan, has petitioned the city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, to instruct the EMPD to take urgent action against the illegal miners who frequently flout the municipal by-laws in and around the Plastic City area.

“The petition comes after another road failure along Main Reef Road as a result of illegal mining activities,” said ward councillor for the area, Brandon Pretorius.

“It is concerning and discouraging that the executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina, along with numerous members of his mayoral committee, have visited the site many times and are well aware of the criminal acts occurring in the area.

“It is unfortunate that Brakpan’s residents have to resort to petitions to encourage action from the CoE on issues that it is already well aware of.

“The DA, however, will do whatever it takes to hold both the mayor and city manager to account in order to ensure better service delivery for residents.”
