No surprise as Kenya wins in Brakpan

This final was after they walloped Madagascar 40-14 in the semi-final.

Kenya’s sevens rugby side booked their place at next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

They did this by winning the Africa Sevens tournament at Bosman Stadium, on Friday and Saturday.

The East African side were never troubled as they beat Uganda 29-0 in the final.

They started the tournament decider with intent as the imposing figure of Andrew Amonde crashed over to score the first try.

Uganda did not do themselves any favours as Ogena Pius was yellow carded for foul play. This helped the Kenyans continue to pile on the pressure as Daniel Tsabu dotted over to give his team a 14-0 lead at half-time.

Kenya’s Johnston Olindi in action during his team’s 29-0 win over Uganda to claim the African Sevens tournament and a spot at next year’s Olympic Games.

The second half saw Kenya get over the white wash three more times through Jeffrey Oluoch and substitute Oscar Dennis (twice).

This final was after they walloped Madagascar 40-14 in the semi-final.

“The boys played very well,” said Kenya’s coach Paul Feeney.

“We had a plan of how we wanted to play in this tournament. The players worked very hard throughout the competition. They trained for 11 weeks nonstop. We will have a break, then prepare for the 2019/20 World Rugby Sevens Series.”

The win sees the Shujaa join South Africa as the second team from Africa to qualify for the Olympics.

Runners-up Uganda and third-placed Zimbabwe will have another opportunity to push for a place at the global showpiece. They will take part in another Olympic qualifying tournament next year.

Kenya’s sevens rugby team won the African Sevens tournament at Bosman Stadium, last weekend.

This was the second international rugby tournament that Brakpan’s Bosman Stadium has hosted in recent times. In August they hosted the Women’s African Championships which were won by South Africa.

• The final standings after the African Sevens tournament are as follows: 1 Kenya, 2 Uganda, 3 Zimbabwe, 4 Madagascar, 5 Namibia, 6 Zambia, 7 Senegal, 8 Nigeria, 9 Ghana, 10 Morocco, 11 Tunisia, 12 Cote d’Ivoire, 13 Mauritius, 14 Botswana.
