Court brings the hammer down on robber

The case was successfully investigated by Det Sgt Sibusiso Xaba.

A man involved in a robbery at a local supermarket, during which the shop manager was attacked with a hammer, has been jailed for 15 years.

Lucky Sithole (33), from Katlehong, was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and recently sentenced in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court.

The Voortrekker Road supermarket was robbed on May 25, last year.

Two men entered the store around 6am, shortly after it opened, and the 26-year-old shop manager noticed one of the men was carrying a green refuse bag.

This man grabbed a fruit juice from the fridges and then approached the shop manager at the till point.

He then pulled a carpenter’s hammer from the refuse bag and ordered the shop manager to fill the bag with packets of cigarettes.

When the shop manager refused, the man jumped over the counter and attacked him with the hammer.

The victim was struck on the head and hand.

During the attack, the robber’s accomplice kept a watch at the door.

The victim’s brother, who had been in the shop undetected by the robbers, tried to run out of the store to seek help but was blocked by the robber’s accomplice and another man.

The disturbance, however, caused the hammer-wielding man and his partners in crime to flee.

Cigarettes valued at approximately R800 were taken.

The shop manager, along with the assistance of members of the public, chased the men and managed to apprehend one of them near Currey Street.

He was taken back to the supermarket with the help of a local security company.

Police were summoned to the scene and the man was arrested.

The case was successfully investigated by Det Sgt Sibusiso Xaba.
