In the spotlight: Get to know Lizzy Simelane

Busisiwe “Lizzy” Simelane is in the spotlight.

Busisiwe “Lizzy” Simelane has been faithfully and dutifully serving the customers of Sherwood Pick n Pay since 1999. A supervisor at the store, Lizzy will be retiring at the end of the month after 20 years of service. The 65-year-old is married to Lukas Buti Simelane (69) and lives in Tsakane.

Describe one of your typical workdays?

I work shifts. Sometimes it’s from 7am to 2pm or 10am to 8pm and sometimes it’s from noon to 8pm.

As a supervisor, I make sure everything runs smoothly and that the customers are treated well and are satisfied.

I also ensure staff are doing what they’re supposed to be doing.

What are you going to do with all your spare time once you’ve retired?

For the first month or two, I just want to relax.

After that my aim is to go to the gym three times a week and then share my time between church and my home.

I would also like to get involved in my community.

What will you miss most about working at Sherwood Pick n Pay?

The people.

I will miss the customers, my colleagues and management.

If you could start all over again, would you change your career path in any way? Why?

Not at all.

I think I’m just so used to it. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

I love people so socialising is my hobby.

I particularly enjoy spending time with the women in our church group.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

You have to love yourself before you can love someone else.

You also have to be helpful to others and be ready to listen and take on their troubles so you can help.

If you had the power to solve one and only one problem in the world, what would it be and why?

I don’t like seeing anyone hurt, so I would like to see an end to violence and other problems that cause pain.

Who or what inspires you?

My church.

What makes you laugh?

Everything.

Laughing makes you healthy.

If you don’t laugh, your heart will stop.

Name one thing about yourself that most people don’t know.

I’m very cheeky when I want to be.
