Simple remedies in your kitchen cupboard

Ever wondered whether you should eat pineapple for your headache? Or avocado for your arthritis? Well, wonder no more.

These simple, natural remedies have been known to work for many common ailments. And all it takes is a short walk to the kitchen.

So what are these wonder remedies?

• For a sore throat, honey, yoghurt, and lemon juice all soothe the throat. Most sore throats are caused by viral infections, so take vitamins A, C, E, eat garlic, and suck on zinc lozenges. Avoid spicy, salty or acidic foods. Drink plenty of liquids, such as water, juice, and camomile tea.

• Frequent and loose stools, with cramping and stomach pain, often signify diarrhoea. Chamomile, cayenne, ginger tea, grapefruit seed extract all help to lessen symptoms. Also drink plenty of water, rice water, and ‘green drinks’ to keep hydrated. Avoid high fibre foods and dairy products.

• Headaches come in many forms; cluster, eyestrain, fever, hangover, hypertension, migraine, sinus, tension, and more. Eat a well balance diet, such as watercress, cherries, garlic, pineapple, and include protein at every meal. Do not consume alcohol, cheese, chocolate, onions, peanut butter, or wine. Apply cold compresses.

• Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, and is usually characterised by pain and stiffness, or swelling. Eating foods containing sulphur, such as asparagus, garlic, onions, and eggs may help. Also try to include non-acidic fresh fruit and vegetables. Cold packs and hot showers may relieve pain.

• Asthma is a lung disease that causes obstruction of the airways. Eat a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, oatmeal, brown rice and whole grains. Include garlic and onions. Avoid gas producing foods such as beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and do not eat ice cream or cold foods and juices.

• Sinusitis is an inflammation of the nasal sinuses. Drink distilled water and fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Drink hot liquids such as soups and herbal teas. Use steam inhalations with eucalyptus.

• Anaemia is a reduction of the red blood cells. Include the following in your diet; apples, apricots, asparagus, bananas, broccoli, egg yolks, kelp, leafy greens, parsley, peas, plums, prunes, grapes, rice bran, squash, turnip, and whole grains. Avoid beer, dairy, and soft drinks.

• Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder where the normal contractions of the digestive tract become irregular. A diet high in fibre, such as plenty of fruits and vegetables, and whole grains may help. Avoid processed and spicy food, sugar, wheat, alcohol, and tobacco. Do not eat right before going to bed.

• Hypoglycaemia is a condition where the level of glucose in the blood is at a low level. Avoid alcohol, processed food, dried fruits, salt, sugar, fats, soft drinks, white flour, and sweet fruits. Eat a diet high in fibre and include vegetables, brown rice, oats, potatoes, low fat cottage cheese, fish, grains, and white chicken breast.
