United clobbered in Kempton

Following away losses to Alberton and Benoni Northerns, skipper Justin Gamble and his team were again in away-day action on December 2, this time against Kempton Park Cricket Club at Barnard Stadium.

It was never going to be easy playing against three of the perennially strongest sides in the Eastern Premier League in succession for Brakpan’s United Cricket Club.

Gamble won the morning coin toss and elected to bat first, a move that didn’t work too well against Benoni Northerns the weekend before.

The batting order was wrapped up by the Kempton bowlers within 33 overs for a score of 143.

Gamble, André Johnson and Brendon Frost shared the top-score of the day with 33 runs apiece.

Kempton only needed 20 overs (despite losing three wickets) to surpass the target set by the visiting outfit.

The United captain said: “It was the same old story for us this week with no real partnerships to speak of.

“A few of the guys got starts with the bat but nobody went on to play really meaningful innings.

“We probably needed 250 runs or so to be competitive on the day and 140 was never going to really trouble them unless we got a few very early wickets, but that wasn’t the case.”

The league has now reached its halfway point and breaks for the festive season.

“We have some serious work to do in the first three games next year to ensure we stay in the top six, but the guys are up for it and we’ll be giving 100 per cent towards that.”
