SPCA seizes neglected chickens

The Brakpan SPCA urges members of the public to report suspected animal cruelty.

Twenty-seven severely neglected chickens were confiscated during the execution of a search and seizure warrant at the Brakpan Train Station on Thursday, last week.

The raid was carried out by the Brakpan SPCA inspectorate in conjunction with EMPD members from the Brakpan precinct.

The chickens were kept in cages where they had no ventilation or room to move.

Broiler chickens were being kept in cages on the property of the station where the animals had no ventilation or room to move.

The inspectorate gained entry into the premises and removed all the chickens.

Animal cruelty is a serious crime and may render any persons found contravening the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962 liable to arrest and prosecution.

Any persons found guilty in a court of law shall furthermore be liable upon conviction to imprisonment of 36 months or to a fine not exceeding R60 000 in accordance with the Adjustment of Fines Act 101 of 1991.

The Brakpan SPCA urges members of the public to report suspected animal cruelty to them on 011 742 2007.
