Building rubble turned into commodity

Members of the community can access the landfill sites and dump building rubble weighing up to 1 000kg for free.

The City of Ekurhuleni is converting tons of unwanted building rubble every month into a usable commodity to fix roads.

At Rooikraal Landfill Site in Boksburg, tons of building rubble is received and processed.

The city runs five municipal landfill sites that receive building rubble disposed of by construction companies and residents renovating their homes.

Members of the community can access the landfill sites and dump building rubble weighing up to 1 000kg for free.

The rubble should, however, not exceed 300mm in diameter, as this is then charged at R268.27 per ton.

“The municipality does not charge for rubble weighing 1 000kg or less, so long as it does not exceed 300mm in diameter,” said Clr Ndosi Shonge, Ekurhuleni MMC for Environment and Waste Management Services.

“This is to encourage residents or builders to not illegally dump rubble all over and to instil a culture of utilising the landfill site facilities.

“As such, rubble of less than 300mm is categorised as zero-rated.”

Operating hours for the municipal landfill sites are as follows:

• Weltevreden: 7am to 5pm.

• Rooikraal: 7am to 5.30pm.

• Simmer and Jack (Germiston): 7am to 5.30pm.

• Platkop (Vosloorus): 7am to 5pm.

• Rietfontein (Springs): 7am to 5pm.
