Brakpan finally has its own parkrun.

At 8am on April 21, 545 people took part on the very first parkrun event held in Brakpan.

The parkrun events, an initiative brought to South Africa by nine-time Comrades Marathon winner Bruce Fordyce, has grown in leaps and bounds with events sprouting up all over the country, and now all over the East Rand.

These folks enjoyed the newly launched Brakpan parkrun on Saturday morning. They are Catheryn Crole, Bronwyn Erwee and Kathlean Eschner. Front: Bradley Diamond.

Mariëtte Rossouw, the Ekurhuleni ambassador for parkrun, said that the new parkrun is extremely exciting for the people of Brakpan.

“Lots of people cannot get to Benoni or Springs every Saturday morning, so we have brought parkrun to their doorstep,” she said.

Rossouw added that parkrun is growing in Ekurhuleni with another event soon to be launched in KwaThema.

She said that the legendary Fordyce will visit the Brakpan parkrun at the beginning of May.
