Robber jailed for 20 years

A lengthy prison stay is in store for convicted robber Sanele Madonsela.

Madonsela (34) was one of three men who robbed a Dalview resident of his firearm and cash at a Brakpan roadhouse on September 12, 2016.

The victim had stopped at the local eatery that Monday afternoon after withdrawing a large sum of cash at a bank.
A white Opel Astra with three occupants pulled up alongside him and one of the men alighted the vehicle.
The man leaned in through the victim’s open car window and a struggle ensued.
His accomplices rushed to assist and the victim was overpowered and robbed of his 9mm pistol and some of the cash.

Upon fleeing the scene, the trio was spotted by WO Peter Starlenberg and his crew from the Benoni K9 Unit, who were performing crime prevention duties in Dalview.

“The Astra was driving at high speed along Athlone Avenue and overtaking cars so the members gave chase,” said Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for Brakpan police.

“They managed to stop the vehicle on the R23 when the suspects’ vehicle almost collided with another car.
“Two of the suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled towards Wattville, while the other (Madonsela) was found in the car along with a firearm.

“He was arrested and the firearm was confiscated.”

Madonsela was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court and recently sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

The court also deemed him unfit to possess a firearm.
