In the spotlight

Chantelle du Plessis (37) is the new public relations officer at Hirsch’s Carnival.

The Dalpark resident is married to Stephen (40) and has three children, Stephen (17), Ruben (15) and Deseree (12).

• For how long have you worked at Hirsch’s? Have you always worked in public relations? Elaborate:

I joined Hirsch’s last year, August 2016. No, I previously worked for a healthcare company as a regional secretary for 16 years.

• Describe a typical day at the office. What does your job entail?

I get to work every morning at 7am, even though we only open at 8.30am.

It gives me enough time to plan my day.

We have a morning meeting with staff at 8am to find out what the agenda is for the day.

Each person in our branch gets to do a life lesson, compliment (where we compliment someone for a job well done), health tip and ‘proud to be me’.

Mr and Mrs Hirsch visit our store at least once a week, and the meeting is normally filled with motivation and dance.

I do demonstrations with one of the products we have in our store, so people can see how to use it.

I plan business networking events, ladies’ networking events and domestic workers’ workshops.

We also have coffee and muffin mornings at different businesses.

• What do you like most about your job?

Getting to work with Margaret Hirsch.

She has a wealth of knowledge and is an award-winning businesswoman and iconic public figure.

The one thing about public relations is that you should be able to speak to people.

Public relations is such a wonderful platform to meet new people from all walks of life.

• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

I love spending time with the family, braaing and watching rugby.

I am a big Blue Bulls supporter.

• What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

Never give up. Fall down, dust yourself off and carry on.

• If you had the power to solve one and only one problem in the world, what would it be and why?

I wish all the stray animals could find loving homes.

• If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be and why?

My car: without a car a public relations officer can’t do her job.

My phone: it keeps me in the loop with everything and it’s a key item for any public relations officer.

Photo albums: all our memories.

Make-up: you should always look your best.

Toothbrush: oral hygiene is very important.

• What are you most afraid of and why?

Losing my husband and kids.

They are the most important people in my life.

• If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be and why?

To witness space travel and maybe get to meet other beings.

• What is your favourite thing about Brakpan?

The people. I have met some amazing ladies at our networking events.

It’s so inspiring to see women come together and step into their roles of mothers as well as business owners.

Brakpan is full of inspirational women.

The people here stand together, and there is really a sense of community.

If someone needs help, someone else steps in. I love it.
