Unbeaten run comes to an end for United Prems

A five-game unbeaten run in the Eastern Premier League came to an end on November 26 for United Cricket Club when they travelled to the Lindeque Oval to play Alberton Cricket Club.

Skipper Justin Gamble lost the morning coin toss and was asked to field first by the opposition captain Juanre Potgieter.

The match also saw the return of Eden Links, who represented the Titans, to the United fold.

Links made an instant impact with the ball with bowling figures of 4/30 in his allotted 10 overs.

JP Meade, although expensive, was the next best of the bowling figures with statistics of 3/64 in 7.3 overs.

Alberton’s opening batsman JC Maritz (73 runs from 78 balls) and number five batsman Potgieter (93 runs from 89 balls) proved tough to dismiss as they helped guide the home team to a first innings score of 260 all out in 48.3 overs.

With the bat it was a poor showing from the United willow-wielders.

Aidan Justus (22 runs) and Xolane Shongwe (20 runs) were top scorers with the bat for United as they were skittled out for 122 runs in 33 overs, a 138-run for Alberton and a first defeat in the 2017/2018 Premier League campaign for Gamble’s team.

“It was an extremely disappointing performance from us,” said Gamble.

“We had no partnerships with the bat and very soft dismissals all the way through the innings.

“I would have liked to see more fight from the guys, but we will need to move on and look forward to a big game this weekend against Kempton Park.

“I think 260 was a good score on that pitch, but certainly achieveable if we had batted properly.

“We will be looking to put in a good performance this week and go into the Christmas break on top of the log.”

That match versus Kempton Park will be played away from home at the Barnard Stadium.
