Motorsport mayhem making its way to Carnival City

The event at Carnival City, on November 18 and 19, promises spectacular action with some of the world’s biggest daredevils at the wheel including Ken Block, Luke Woodham and Riku Tahko.

On August 23, XS Promotions and Carnival City announced that the outrageously popular Gymkhana GRiD 2017 will be hitting Ekurhuleni in November.

This will be the first time ever that Gymkhana GRiD has ventured to South African shores.

The event at Carnival City, on November 18 and 19, promises spectacular action with some of the world’s biggest daredevils at the wheel including Ken Block, Luke Woodham and Riku Tahko.

Motoring superstars Finland’s Riku Tahko, the UK’s Luke Woodham and South African SupaDrift champion Jason Webb will shred tyres at the upcoming Gymkhana GRiD are seen at the media launch of the event at Carnival City.

It is also the 2017 end season showdown.

“What a coup for Carnival City to host this outrageously popular international event in its first-ever installment in South Africa,” said Michelle Smith, marketing manager at Carnival City.

“Staging extreme motor sporting events like Gymkhana GRiD is aligned with our promise to provide diverse and exciting entertainment to our community.

“Over the years, we have brought to the city some of the most exhilarating motor, drifting and extreme sporting events to Ekurhuleni.

“Visitors have flocked to watch these events and we have no doubt Gymkhana GRiD will be the same.”

Herald sports journalist Logan Green is a little bit nervous as he hops into a drift car with three-time Gymkhana GRiD champion Luke Woodham of the UK at the media launch of the event.

Now celebrating its sixth year of tyre-slaying competition, Gymkhana GRiD is set to shred the tread at the impressive Carnival City Casino.

Gymkhana GRiD has a racing format like no other that mixes donuts with clipping points, and power slides with apexes – it’s the tyre smoke-filled vision of racing genius Ken Block.

Gymkhana GRiD’s unique competition set-up allows small power to take down big brake horsepower (BHP) in all out automotive combat.

Split into two classes, Gymkhana GRiD gives drivers of All Wheel Drive (AWD) and Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) cars the chance to go head-to-head, and against the clock, on a custom designed course.

Gymkhana GRiD will take place in Carrival City’s main parking area.
