Massive kickboxing tourney returns

Shihan Raymond ‘The Whip’ Phillips, tournament director and president of Xtreme Kickboxing Technologies (XKT), said this was one of the biggest events ever held in Brakpan.

One of the biggest South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA) sanctioned kickboxing events, Great North 2, was recently held at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre on August 26.

Close to 400 fighters from all over South Africa took part on the day.

Shihan Raymond ‘The Whip’ Phillips, tournament director and president of Xtreme Kickboxing Technologies (XKT), said this was one of the biggest events ever held in Brakpan.

“It shows there is a definite increase in the sport and that is exciting to see,” said Phillips.

“In a recent interview with the Herald the former world champion stated that this event will be the springboard for the Elite Fighter Programme that will be launched where fighters will be selected to train and better themselves in elite training squads.

“This programme will transform our athletes to a much higher level of fighter and will allow them to compete on a much more even playing field internationally.

Some women medal winners from the Great North 2 tournament at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre are Clarise Luijk (second place), Simone le Roux (first place, XKT,) and Lene Pretorius (third place).

“These championships were also a great activator to motivate students to participate and stand a chance to be elected for the programme.

“It would also not have been possible without our new sponsors who have come on board.

“This programme will pave the way for our future kickboxing role models and heroes.

“Elected athletes and their instructors will be notified of their inclusion within the next few weeks.”

Phillips added that XKT was looking forward to their next event on Saturday, September 30 where the popular junior kickboxing tournament, the Battle of the Tiny Titans, would show their skill at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre.
