Land grab halted

Numerous shacks and other structures were promptly dismantled by the Red Ants.

Quick action by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has prevented the further illegal invasion of land along Location Road.

According to Brandon Pretorius, DA councillor for Ward 97 in Brakpan, more structures were being erected in the area, near Brakpan North, over the weekend.

“It was then reported to the local EMPD to follow up, and on Sunday council acted against the illegal land invasion,” he said.

Numerous shacks and other structures were promptly dismantled by the Red Ants.

Those living in the area prior to the recent “evictions” will have to be reallocated by council – squatters were previously removed from the adjacent piece of veld in February, but quickly established a new community across the road.

Pretorius said pressure will be kept on council to ensure the squatters are moved.

“It is important that council implements enforcement of land usage rights for orderly development,” he said.

“Council must do more to provide appropriate housing opportunities for all those who need them.”

Pretorius urged residents to inform their ward councillors of illegal land invasion immediately.

“Council will then act straight away to ensure the invasion is stopped,” he added.

Pretorius can be contacted on 083 308 7821.
