Long jail term for rapist

Mandla Madonsela, from Langaville Extension Seven, was convicted on three counts of rape, one of attempted murder, one of robbery with aggravating circumstances and another of robbery.

A 34-year-old Tsakane man was recently sentenced to an effective 55 years imprisonment, in the Brakpan Regional Court, for rape, robbery and attempted murder.

Mandla Madonsela, from Langaville Extension Seven, was convicted on three counts of rape, one of attempted murder, one of robbery with aggravating circumstances and another of robbery.

Madonsela and an accomplice robbed and raped two women at gunpoint in an open veld in Langaville Extension Two, on May 27, 2014.

A cellphone valued at R550 was stolen.

Sentencing took place on May 30 and the term of imprisonment is as follows:

• Count one (rape): 15 years.

• Count two (robbery with aggravating circumstances): 15 years.

• Count three (rape): 15 years.

• Count four (attempted murder): 10 years.

• Count five (robbery): 10 years.

• Count six (rape): 15 years.

The court ordered that the sentence on count one be served concurrently with the sentence on count two, and that the sentence for count five be served concurrently with the sentence on count six.

The court also deemed Madonsela unfit to possess a firearm.

The case was successfully investigated by Det WO Leshole Monyele from the Brakpan Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
