For the love of baking

Seven aspiring bakers recently started a six-week course at Anna Mhlanga’s cookery school, which was run out of the demonstration kitchen at Hirsch’s Carnival, in Brakpan.

On Thursday, last week, Mhlanga had the honour of handing over certificates to these graduates in cake icing and decorating. The winners in various cake categories were also announced and their creations were on display to the public during the evening’s proceedings.

Motivational speaker Matshepo Sematle was the guest speaker and encouraged hard work as a means to being successful.

Margaret Hirsch, CEO of the Hirsch’s group, helped to judge the cakes and choose the winner.

Hirsch explained how the journey of Anna’s cookery school started.

“I don’t know how Anna found me, but a few years ago she came to me and told me she doesn’t want to be poor anymore,” said Hirsch.

“I asked her what her passion is and she replied baking is her passion. I didn’t hesitate to ask her for samples and that’s where our journey started.”

Mhlanga started a small business selling her cakes but knew that she didn’t want to stop there. She decided to teach other people the skills she had learned over the years by starting the cookery school. There has already been a number of graduating classes from her six-week course.

“I’m very proud of Anna and everything she has achieved,” Hirsch said.

The graduation class, with the winning categories, are as follows:

• Pamella Makwavarara: Best carrot cake (shared with Getrude Murefu) and overall winner.

• Shamiso Mutewuri (graduated).

• Vennesa Nkomo: Best knife decorator.

• Begay Moyo: Best black forest cake.

• Getrude Murefu: Best carrot cake (shared with Pamella).

• Keneuoe Molotsi: Best basket weave and best doll cake decorator.

• Blessing Kufakunesu: Best wedding cake decorator.
