Getting to know Capt Mavhungu Ndou.

Capt Mavhungu Ndou (51), from the local SAPS, is the manager for Sector One in Brakpan. Sector policing is an approach to policing whereby the service area of a police station is divided into smaller, manageable areas. Brakpan is divided into four sectors and a rural area. Sector One comprises the Brakpan CBD, Brakpan West (dam), Anzac, Brakpan East (Power Street to Bedford Street, Voortrekker Road to Boundary Road) and Brakpan North.

Dunnottar resident Ndou is married to Thokozile, and has two children, Takalani (21) and Lufuno (16).

• For how long have you been with the SAPS?

Thirty years and 10 months.

• What sparked your interest in policing?

The prevention of crime.

• What do you like most about your job?

Serving and protecting the community.

• If you weren’t a police officer, what would you be?

A teacher.

• Would you let your family members do this job?

My wife is a police officer.

• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

Soccer.

• What are you most afraid of?

Nothing.

• What motivates you?

Communication.

• What advice would you give to young people wanting to work in the SAPS?

It is a calling.

• What is your favourite thing about Brakpan?

The police station is big and there are many things to learn.
