Class of 2016 makes Brakpan High School proud

Good results against all odds.

Brakpan High School’s matric class of 2016 attained an 87 per cent pass rate.

This is a slight increase from the previous year’s pass rate of 86.4 per cent.

School principal Lucky Nkopane believes the class of 2016 did the school proud, by getting good results against all odds.

“A total number of 121 learners passed matric at our school; and this achievement makes us proud,” he said.

“Our learners continue to do well in English as a home language, while most of them actually speak vernacular or Afrikaans at home.

“Ninety-seven per cent of our learners passed English – and we have a total number of 35 distinctions in subjects like accounting, mathematics, life sciences and physical sciences.

“We continue to do well in the service subjects like computer applications technology, where we’ve attained a 100 per cent pass rate for five consecutive years.

“Other service subjects that are a speciality at our school, like consumer studies and tourism, have contributed 100 per cent pass rates – and tourism has contributed the most number of distinctions in this category.

“Our overall percentage of 87 per cent, is based on the negative impact that progressed learners had on the results.”

The school’s top achiever is Palesa Mohale, who was also the 2016 president of the school’s RCL.

Palesa obtained distinctions in English, Afrikaans, life orientation and life sciences.

“We are very proud of her performance and wish her the best,” said Nkopane, adding that Palesa has received a bursary to study at the University of Pretoria.

Nkopane told the Herald that 2017 promises to be the year the school claims back its position amongst the top schools in the Gauteng East District.

“I wish the class of 2016 all of the best in their future endeavours; and I have faith in the foundation that my educators have given them,” Nkopane said.

“I know they’ll make a positive contribution in a variety of careers that they’ll embark on.

“Our sustained remarkable academic performance can be attributed to the teamwork, that’s displayed by the stakeholders at the institution.

“The parents and educators co-operate to the benefit of learners.”
