Emergency services on high alert for violent thunderstorms

If outdoors, seek shelter immediately.

Following heavy thunderstorms and violent weather phenomena that can be dangerous, the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) has cautioned residents across Ekurhuleni to be on high alert as thunderstorms can produce a combination of lightning, flash flooding, very strong winds, hail and in extreme cases, tornadoes.

According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, the department is prepared for any eventualities that might erupt as a result.

Communities affected by these adverse weather conditions are advised to contact the emergency call centre immediately so emergency services can render swift intervention.

Precautions to follow during thunderstorms:

• If outdoors, seek shelter immediately.
• Avoid sheltering under trees.
• Stay away from telephone poles or power lines
• Avoid isolated sheds, unprotected gazebos or picnic shelters.
• When indoors, stay well clear of windows.
• Shelter pets and vehicles.
• Disconnect electrical appliances.
• Avoid using telephones.
• Don’t shower or bath during a thunderstorm.
• Avoid being near any metal/steel structures such as pylons, windmills and golf carts.
• Do not play sport during a thunderstorm.

Residents are advised to listen to the radio and watch television for warnings and obey instructions accordingly.

“DEMS is always prepared to timeously respond to all incidents within the municipality,” said Ntladi.

“Communities are also expected to assist in mitigating the occurrences of emergencies.”

In case of emergencies, call 10177 or 011 458 0911 (call centre), or 112 from a cellphone.

Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.

Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.

Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
