Be alert when visiting parks and public areas

Be aware of your surroundings.

Theunis Kotze, general manager of ADT Inland Region, is urging residents to be cautious when heading to parks and public areas.

“We have seen an increase in robberies and attacks on people out walking or running in parks and other public areas,” he said.

“We strongly urge residents not to head out in the early hours or in the dark and to always go in groups.”

He offered the following safety advice:

  • If you are heading out, let someone know when you will be back, this way if you are not home as scheduled they can do something about it immediately.
  • Remove jewellery and don’t carry cash. Keep other valuable items like cellphones hidden from view.
  • Don’t think that taking your dog with you is protection enough. Rather find a time when you can walk with someone else. It is always safer to walk in groups
  • Do not walk with earphones as you will not be aware of what is going on around you.
  • Try and vary your route and times to avoid becoming predictable.
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Avoid areas that are secluded or hidden from general view.

“And most importantly, if you notice anything suspicious, report it immediately,” added Kotze.
