Quarter final coming to Bosman Stadium

Siyaya Brakpan Rugby Club ensured that they would top Pool C of the South African Rugby Union’s (Saru) Gold Cup, with a 29-16 win over Zimbabwean club Old Georgians, at Bosman Stadium, on Saturday, October 8.

The victory means that the ”Panne” are unbeaten in their four Pool C matches.

Although their place in the quarter-finals of the competition was certain last week, already, Brakpan went about their business with minimal fuss on Saturday.

The team will now host PE Police at the “House of Pain” tomorrow (Saturday, October 15).

Things will not be so friendly on the pitch for the visitors from “The Friendly City”, with the Panne striving to do better than 2013’s bronze medal.

On Saturday, Brakpan (without their captain Francois “Bones” Robbertse) took care of business against the Harare-based Old Georgians outfit.

They got out of the starting blocks early, with a try from veteran Theo Becker.

The Panne scrum was powerful again, but their usually strong line-out work left a lot to be desired.

In fact, the only clean line-out was won in the 65th minute.

This was capitalised on by replacement flanker Ricky Menezes, who stretched over to score the fourth try of the match for Brakpan (following tries from winger Thinus Ueckermann and replacement fly half Gido Horn).

Horn converted two tries while Hagen Mumba converted one of his own.

Horn also slotted a penalty kick on the day.
