Four nabbed after mall robbery and shoot-out

The suspects shot at the metro police vehicle.

Four men ended up behind bars following an armed robbery at a shop in the Tsakane Mall, on Monday.

The robbery took place at about 5pm and the loot of cellphones and a 9mm pistol were recovered.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the EMPD First Responder Unit members gave chase after receiving information of the robbery.

“The suspects jumped into a white Toyota Tazz and sped off,” said Kgasago.

“In the ensuing high speed chase, the suspects shot at the metro police vehicle and the metro police retaliated by shooting back.

“An EMPD patrol Ford Ranger vehicle caught a bullet on the driver’s door.”

The vehicle was cornered in Extension 11, Tsakane, and the men were arrested.

An undisclosed number of the stolen cellphones were recovered, as well as an unlicensed 9mm pistol.

“Fortunately, no casualties were reported after the high-speed chase and the shoot-out,” added Kgasago.

The four suspects, aged between 25 and 39, were detained at the Tsakane Police Station.

They were charged with armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of stolen goods.
