EMPD strives to make informal settlement safer

The periodic patrols will continue.

EMPD Brakpan Precinct officers and Peace Corps members recently conducted foot patrols within the Plastic City informal settlement, in an effort to make the area safer.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, the informal settlement populace is approximately 800, the majority of whom are foreign nationals.

Waste processing and illegal mining are the two main sources of income for many people living here.

“Complaints of spiking crime, vandalising of the concrete palisade fencing around the landfill site (Weltevreden) to gain access and diverting trucks coming to dump at the landfill site to the informal settlement are some of the illegal activities prevalent in and around the informal settlement,” said Kgasago.

“The periodic patrols will continue to be conducted to make the area safer.”
