Junior fancier wins pigeon race

Brakpan Racing Pigeon Club’s fanciers achieved some good results in the last two weeks.

On Saturday, July 2, their pigeons were liberated from Bloemfontein, an average distance of 388km.

The birds had a strong wind from behind and they raced home at a phenomenal speed of approximately 1 700m per minute (110km/hr)

Young bird results from Bloemfontein were: 1 Hennie Pienaar, 2 Cyril Jasper, 3 Cyril Jasper.

The open bird race results were: 1 Hennie Pienaar, 2 Piet Gerber, 3 Cyril Jasper.

On Saturday, July 9, the pigeons were liberated at Rietrivier, which is an average distance of 487km.

The pigeons did not have much wind to assist them as they raced home and averaged a speed of approximately 1 250m per minute (75 km/hour).

It was a tough race for most of the fanciers.

The young bird race results were: 1 Etienne van der Walt, 2 Thys Matthysen, 3 Thys Matthysen.

The open bird race results were: 1 Adriaan du Plessis (junior member), 2 David Pretorius, 3 Thys Matthysen.

Club chairman Etienne van der Walt congratulated junior member Adriaan du Plessis, racing under the name “Kapokie Hokke”, for winning the open race.

“It seems as if Brakpan Racing Pigeon Club is cultivating the future champion pigeon fanciers,” he said.
