Boot saves the day

A late penalty from Gido Horn ensured a dramatic victory for Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV in the classic encounter with near neighbours Springs at Olympia Park on Saturday, July 9.

The Valke Peregrine League Top Six clash was a must win clash for the “Panne” in terms of their Gold Cup ambitions and turned out to be a real humdinger of an affair.

Horn’s boot would ensure a nervy 25-23 come-from-behind victory for the team from Bosman Stadium.

The victory means the Brakpan side have extended their advantage on the log by five points over Springs.

Their hosts, though, enjoyed the first half advantage at 13-5.

Panne were looking stronger in the second half and took the lead 19-13 before a serious ankle injury to one of the Springs players forced the momentum to swing the other way.

At 22-23, Horn slotted over the penalty to ensure a thrilling win.

Brakpan’s try-scorers on the day were Jason Arundle, Jacques Moller and Thinus Ueckermann while Ashley Buchler converted two tries and Horn knocked over two penalty kicks.

In other results the club’s Lilywhites (second team) defeated Springs 38-12 while the u-21 side were 15-20 losers against their rivals.
