SupaDrift to return to the Rock

The weekend of Friday, July 22, and Saturday, July 23, promises to be alive with roaring and skidding when drift cars permeate the Brakpan silence.

Ekurhuleni’s Rock Raceway is hosting the fourth installment of the 2016 SupaDrift Series, presented by Lyoness and Achilles Tyres, and it certainly promises to be a humdinger of an event.

The 2016 championship is wide open and much of that will be decided upon during the weekend’s battling.

“It sets a precedent for the rest of the season,” said Mikey Skelton, XS Promotions marketing director and co-founder of the SupaDrift Series.

“If a driver in the top part of the current rankings can topple the scale and win this event he will automatically run a course of momentum into the latter part of the series.”

Drivers like Zein and Jim McFarlane will certainly bring the challenge to the current series leader Shane Gutzeit.

Gutzeit said he has massive respect for his competitors and knows that he has to compete and make it count on the blacktop at the next event.

“No-one can afford to rest, it’s the most competitive drift season yet and anything can happen at the Rock.

“The walls are close by and we will have to be running them to impress the judges and keep the competition at bay, but, when you get close to the walls, anything can happen.”

Richat Khan, from Mozambique, in his S15 Nissan will also be a man to watch and he has certainly impressed the entire season.

“All of the competitive drivers love this venue as the fans are right up close and personal and the drivers know the importance of the event.

“It’s going to be a wild weekend,” said Khan.

The SupaDrift Series opens on Friday, July 22, (practise day) and continues late into Saturday afternoon, ending with tight tandems right up until the final battle as an adrenaline feature.
