Safety and security during the holidays: Good judgement is the key

As 2015 rapidly approaches its conclusion, most South Africans will be thinking of relaxing with their loved ones. But a local security company has cautioned people not to neglect their home and personal safety habits, as the festive season is normally a busy time for would-be criminals.

“The best approach is to simply keep practicing those security measures you have followed during the past 12 months, to ensure that you can enjoy your holiday without worry,” says ADT Security’s general manager inland region, Theunis Kotze.

He explains that there are three basic measures that anyone can implement, whether they stay at home during the holidays or are lucky enough to be going away for their end-of-year break.

“Start with the contact details for the emergency and law enforcement agencies that operate in the area where you are spending your holiday.”

He says that an emergency scenario, such as an attempted robbery, is not the time to realise you don’t have the contact details for the local police or neighbourhood watch.

The common sense approach to safety, Kotze explains, should also extend to avoiding unfamiliar and possibly risky areas.

“In the same way that you would think twice about walking through dimly lit areas or neighbourhoods that you are unfamiliar with, you should also avoid these potentially dangerous areas during your holidays, especially if you are visiting a town or city for the first time while on holiday.”

Thirdly, trust your instinct.

“If something feels wrong, or if someone looks out of place, it is best to err on the side of caution by raising the alarm,” Kotze advises.
