Pay rise for domestic workers

The Department of Labour recently announced that the minimum wages of domestic workers will be increased next month.

Minister of Labour Mildred Oliphant made the following announcement: “Wages for the vulnerable workers in the Domestic Worker Sector will be adjusted with effect from December 1 2015”.

This means that an employee who works for more than 27 hours in Area A, under which Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality falls, should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R11.44, while an employee who works for fewer than 27 hours in Area A should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R13.39.

An employee who works for more than 27 hours in Area B should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R10.23, while an employee who works for fewer than 27 hours in Area B should be paid not less than an hourly rate of R12.07.

The new determination will be effective until the end of November 2016.

Area A:

The following municipalities:

Bergrivier, Breederivier, Buffalo City, Cape Agulhas, Cederberg, City of Cape Town, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, Drakenstein, Ekurhuleni, Emalahleni, Emfuleni, Ethekwini Unicity, Gamagara, George, Hibiscus Coast, Karoo Hoogland, Kgatelopele, Khara Hais, Knysna, Kungwini, Kouga, Langeberg, Lesedi, Makana, Mangaung, Matzikama, Metsimaholo, Middelburg, Midvaal, Mngeni, Mogale, Mosselbaai, Msunduzi, Mtubatuba, Nama Khoi, Nelson Mandela, Nokeng tsa Taemane, Oudtshoorn, Overstrand, Plettenbergbaai, Potchefstroom, Randfontein, Richtersveld, Saldanha Bay, Sol Plaatjie, Stellenbosch, Swartland, Swellendam, Theewaterskloof, Umdoni, uMhlathuze and Witzenberg.

Area B:

All other municipalities not mentioned in Area A, including: Mbombela Municipality, Umjindi Municipality, Nkomazi Municipality, Thaba Chweu Local Municipality and Bushbuckridge Municipality.
