Perjury can land you in jail

Brakpan police are warning residents not to open false cases, after a recent increase in common robberies, where only cellphones were reported as stolen.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station, warned that perjury, which is the willful act of swearing a false oath, is a serious offence and that offenders will have a permanent criminal record.

“There’s a good chance of getting caught, because we work with insurance companies on a daily basis,” said Joubert.

A person who makes a false statement can be fined or sentenced to jail if proven to be guilty.

The police are encouraging residents to rather be honest if something happened to the cellphone.
