Management today issued a statement, explaining what happened:

Based on the incident that occurred on the construction site, situated in the parking area near the bottom of the exit gate, at approximately 7.45pm yesterday, four robbers were attempting to steal roof sheeting from the construction site.

The security company, securing the construction site saw the robbers loading the sheets onto the vehicle and approached them and called for back-up. Two suspects then fled the scene in a white Corsa bakkie.

It appears, from what we have been told by construction security, that Metro Police officers were at the mall at the time and witnessed the bakkie fleeing, resulting in a shootout between Metro Police and the suspects, who got away.

No construction material was stolen from the site and no injuries occurred.

The mall’s security for the construction site security company is of a high standard, reducing the mall crime by over 70 per cent over the past year and ensuring, to the best of their ability, that all customers and staff are safe.

The Brakpan SAPS has confirmed to the Herald that the investigation is still ongoing and no one has been arrested as yet.
