Father and son take Rockmania podiums

The Rock Raceway was certainly the place to be for local speed-freaks, on Saturday, July 11.

The popular Rockmania Extreme delivered riveting motorsport entertainment in the disciplines of drifting, drag racing, oval racing, legends racing and Formula N circuit.

The driver of the day was 12-year-old Brakpan resident Donovan Vorster, also affectionately known as “Little Master”, who was racing in his first ever 100cc Micro Midgets event.

Young Vorster is no stranger to racing, as his career started off in the 60cc Kids in Racing SA Ninja Class, where he was crowned SA2 champion last year, in the WOMZA SA National Championships, in Richards Bay.

Vorster had all the weight on his shoulders as the 14 kart entries were all vying for the podium top spot.

In the first heat the young driver muscled his way to the front of the experienced Micro Midget pack, which is not easy as the drivers don’t easily surrender track positions.

The “Little Master” finished first in the opening heat, while he had to work his way through traffic to get to the front in the second and final heats, at times passing his rivals on the outside line.

His patience bore fruit and his talent shone through as he pulled off a hat trick of victories in the heats.

Racing clearly runs in the family as his father, Johann, joined his son on the podium after winning the 2.1 litre Pinto class on the night.

Johann said he is extremely proud that his son shares his passion for racing and added that he cannot wait for the day when the two face-off against each other in the same racing category.

Both expressed their gratitude to their sponsors and friends for their support in their racing careers.

Donovan thanked Gerhard Koekemoer (GKRD Racing) and his son Keegan for allowing Donovan to race the Micro Midget.

Keegan offered up his driving seat to allow Voster to race his kart.

Johann will next be in action at the WOMZA National 2.1 litre Pinto Championships to be held at the Rock Raceway on August 8.

Drivers from all over South Africa will be in attendance at the event, including the 2015 World Champion hotrod driver, Shane Murphy, from Ireland.
