It has been reported that unsustainable subsidised funding is the reason for the Public Utility Transport Corporation (Putco) deciding to cancel its Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and Tshwane routes.
Today is the last day that Putco buses will be seen in these areas, raising concerns that there will be widespread delays for commuters as a result.
The department of transport, however, announced in a statement yesterday (Monday), that Autopax, a subsidiary of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) will step in to ferry stranded commuters to work and school in the affected areas.
Prasa spokesman Moffet Mofokeng assured commuters that Autopax bus service has enough capacity to avoid delays.
“We will be able to do the job, I don’t foresee problems there.
“I think we do have the capacity, which is why government felt that we could assist,” he said.
Meanwhile, the transport department has announced that members are negotiating contracts with subsidised companies for the affected areas.
The results of these negotiations will be announced at a later stage.
