Housebreakings on the increase

Brakpan police have warned residents to ensure everything is in order before leaving their homes.

WATCH: FOUR ROBBERS BREAK INTO A HOUSE IN BRAKPAN

This follows several break-ins over the weekend.

Laptops, television sets, kettles, DVD players, a camera, cellphones, tablet computers, hair appliances, jewellery and other items were among the stolen goods.

One suspected burglar was caught and arrested at a residence in 22nd Street, Withok Estates, after a security company informed the house owner that his alarm was sounding.

The home owner asked the neighbour’s worker to check if all was in order, and he discovered an unknown man in the house.

The burglar claimed to be working for the house owner.

“The suspect was looking for work in the area, and that’s when he found that no one was at this certain residence and decided to break in,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

The stolen items were recovered and the man was arrested for housebreaking.

“It’s important for people to create an illusion that somebody is home. This can be achieved by leaving a radio or a television on during the day and even leaving a light on when leaving the house during the night time,” said Joubert.

Brakpan police also urge residents to install alarm systems in their homes.

“With the help of security companies that respond immediately when an alarm goes off, the Brakpan SAPS are able to make an arrest before it’s too late,” said Joubert.

Residents are reminded to close all doors, windows and curtains when leaving the premises and, if they have an alarm system, they should ensure it is activated.

“People should also make sure their electric gate closes before they leave their driveway,” added Joubert.

Police also encourage residents to share contact information with neighbours, so they can alert each other if they see anything out of the ordinary.
