Update: Suspect crashes car minutes after stealing it

Brakpan Police have confirmed that the 42-year-old suspect who was arrested Thursday afternoon, after he crashed a hijacked vehicle, was out on parole for another hijacking incident, which occurred in Midrand.

An employee of Toyota Randfontein was filling up a brand new white Toyota Legend at the filling station in Lawrence Street, Dalpark.

The man (51) was standing outside the vehicle, when he suddenly heard somebody shouting repeatedly: “Where are the keys”.

“As he turned around, a man was pointing a firearm at him; a second man pushed him, and the victim fell to the ground. The victim sustained only minor injuries to his arm and head,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

“The armed robber got into a white Audi, with two occupants inside, and sped away.”

The second robber fled in the Toyota Legend and, minutes later, collided with a white Toyota Hilux Bakkie, on the corner of R23 and R554.

The hijacker lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.

“The Metro Police were following the vehicle on the R554, not knowing it was hijacked, because the driver was driving very recklessly and negligently,” said Joubert.

“The suspect was handed over to the members of the police on the scene and he will appear in the Brakpan Magistrates Court soon, on a charge of hijacking.”

Brakpan Police are investigating the matter and the possibility of more arrests is not excluded.
