Speedsters never learn

The EMPD's relentless speed operations along the R23 (Heidelberg Road) seems to have done little to deter motorists from speeding.

Thirty-two motorists face charges of reckless and negligent driving, after they were recently arrested for speeding along this stretch of road.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago the majority were nabbed during a speed operation conducted between 4.30am and 9.30am, on Friday and Saturday morning, last week.

“On Friday, nine speedsters were arrested, with the highest risk-taker being clocked at 142km/h in a 80km/h zone,” said Kgasago.

“The 41-year-old old male driver of a Mercedes Benz sedan claimed he was late for a funeral.

“The rest of the offenders were caught doing between 116km/h and and 125km/h.”

Saturday’s operations resulted in 16 arrests, and the highest speed recorded was 123km/h by a 43-year-old male driver in a Toyota LDV.

The man claimed he was rushing to his farm.

Seven more drivers were arrested along the R23 on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the EMPD recently held a special operation in Brakpan targeting motorcycles.

The operation resulted in five impounds, eight ‘discontinues’, two arrests for displaying false number plates, and the issuing of 48 citations.
