Man sentenced to eight years for assault GBH

The Brakpan Magistrates Court imposed a lengthy jail sentence on a 34-year-old man after he was found guilty of assault GBH and pointing a firearm.

Wiseman Solance Makhaula was sentenced on Thursday, October 30, to eight years imprisonment on the charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and five years for pointing a firearm.

The sentences will run concurrently.

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, Makhaulu stabbed a man on March 17, last year.

“At about 2.30am, an adult male was walking along Wenden Avenue when he was approached by three men, one of whom stabbed him in the neck with a knife,” he said.

“The victim was also stabbed several times on his body.”

Joubert told the Herald that four men who witnessed the attack tried to assist the injured man, but Makhaulu took out a firearm and pointed it at them.

Makhaulu then fled the scene on foot.

“A witness was able to point out the suspect to police a few blocks from where the incident occurred, and he was arrested,” said Joubert.

The case was successfully investigated by Brakpan detective Sgt Thulane Dubazane.
