Total makes teaching dream come true

In 2010, Brakpan resident, Simphiwe Zwane, the daughter of Phineas Makama, who is a forecourt attendant at a Total service station in Brakpan, was awarded a bursary from Total South Africa to study a Bachelor of Arts in Education, at the University of Pretoria.

After completing her studies at the end of 2013, Zwane applied for an internship position as a teacher at Edleen Primary School, in Kempton Park, where she has taught Grade One and Four for the last seven months.

“My sincere gratitude goes out to Total South Africa for giving me the opportunity to get a tertiary qualification and to pursue my dreams,” said Zwane.

The Total South Africa bursary programme targets the children of Total South Africa’s service station staff and car wash attendants who wouldn’t ordinarily have the financial means to provide their children with a tertiary education.

At least one of the parents must have worked at a Total South Africa service station for a minimum of four years.

The initiative is a joint sponsorship project between Total South Africa, its employees and service station dealers, who are encouraged to assist colleagues with their children’s tertiary education tuition.
