Burglars had a field day in Brakpan over the past weekend, and a staggering 14 break-ins were reported to Brakpan police.

The burglaries took place on Friday and Saturday, at addresses along:

* Shepstone Street, Hosking Street and Prince George Avenue, Brenthurst

* Dirk van der Hof Road, Rand Collieries

* Walkden Avenue and Ellis Street, Brakpan North

* Graaf Street, Sonneveld

* Porter Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, Kitzinger Avenue (business burglary) and Kingsway Avenue, Brakpan Central

* Blyde Avenue, Leachville

* Wordsworth Street and Camelthorn Crescent, Dalpark.

The stolen items include 14 television sets, three cellphones, two computers, two DVD players, four amplifiers, three laptops, a tablet, a CD player, a set of golf clubs, groceries, a dustbin, a gas braai, two game consoles, a school bag, liquor, a torch, a camera, jewellery, two sets of car keys, three remote controls, a home theatre system, clothes, bedding and linen.

A shop situated along Kitzinger Avenue was robbed of airtime valued at R3 000 and cigarettes.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, told the Herald that residents can play an important part in preventing burglaries, by taking simple, precautionary measures.

He offered the following safety tips:

* Keep all your doors and security gates locked at all times, even when there is more than one person at home.

All main doors should be fitted with strong locks.

* Keep your garden well lit and trees and plants trimmed to eliminate any possible hiding places.

* If you are able to install additional security devices, do so, as every deterrent helps.

* Keep cash, valuables and firearms in safe boxes that are securely bolted down.

* Report any suspicious-looking persons, noises or sounds to the police immediately.

Remember to listen for dogs barking unusually late in the evening or early in the morning.
