Workers arrested for strike violence

Four people have reportedly been arrested, after a truck belonging to a company in Vulcania was damaged by workers affiliated to trade union Numsa, this morning.

Workers have repeatedly caused damage to Vulcania Reinforcing’s property since the start of the strike last week.

The company is situated along Molecule Road.

Adam Greve, from Vulcania Reinforcing, told the Herald at about 9.30am that strikers had “just sabotaged our truck”.

“The silver lining is the police have responded and are arresting four men who took part in the act,” he added.

The vehicle’s windows were smashed with rocks.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan police station commander, confirmed the arrests but could not verify how many people had been nabbed.

“At this stage I cannot say how many” he said.

“They will be charged with damage to property.”

A case of malicious damage to property was opened at the Brakpan police station yesterday (Monday) by a company situated along Uranium Road, Vulcania.

According to police reports, striking workers threw stones and other projectiles at the company’s building and also set trees alight.

Several windows were broken.

No arrests have been made in connection with this incident.
