Burglars strike when homeowners sleep

The majority of residential burglaries recently reported to Brakpan police have taken place while residents have been at home, sleeping.

“Now that the nights are getting colder, people are inclined to sleep more soundly and criminals know this,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

“People must make sure it is as difficult as possible for criminals to get inside their homes.”

Joubert told the Herald outside gates must be locked, as must all security gates and doors.

“Windows must be tightly secured; a window left open just a fraction is an open invitation to burglars,” he said.

“If possible, install security lights and an alarm system.”

He also pleaded with residents to remove temptation for criminals and ensure that valuables are not visible from outside the home.

“Don’t leave cellphones, laptops or jewellery near a window,” he said, adding that open curtains also allow people to see inside your home.
