Brakpan Legion celebrates with champagne

The Brakpan branch of the South African Legion held its annual champagne breakfast on Sunday, last week.

The social function was held at the Apex Military Base, in Dalview, and was attended by representatives from the SA Legion national branch, as well as those from other military organisations and associations.

The SA Legion assists ex-service personnel and their dependents in the way of housing, pensions, employment and other general welfare.

During the breakfast, it was announced that more than R34 000 was collected during the Poppy Day collections last year.

This collection is held annually to gather funds to assist military veterans.

The highlight of the function was the presentation of medals to ex-serviceman.

A Pro Patria medal was awarded posthumously to Lance Corporal Nicolaas Koekemoer, who was killed in action in Zimbabwe in 1976.

The medal was received by members of his family.

The Southern African medal, General Service medal and Unitas medal, as well as certificates, were also awarded to several other deserving recipients.

Bill Barrie (right) was acknowledged for his loyalty to the legion and was awarded a certificate. It was presented to him by SA Legion national past vice-president Dave Francis.
