Third time unlucky for repeat offender

A 45-year-old man, who has been arrested twice for speeding in the last year, was arrested again on Friday, last week, for the same offence, as well as for evasion.

Members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department caught the repeat offender travelling at 106km/h along Geluksdal Road, between Volt and Uitog roads, which is a 60km/zone.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the man was first arrested in February, last year, and received a R5 000 fine.

“The second arrest occurred in November 2013, and he was fined R8 000,” said Kgasago.

The evasion charge stems from a recent incident, where the man was clocked driving at 180km/h in a 100km/h zone and managed to evade arrest when he sped away from EMPD officers.

In a speed enforcement operation held on Monday, the EMPD arrested 10 drivers for speeding along Main Reef Road, between Apex Road and the Weltevreden Landfill Site.

The rider of a Suzuki motorcycle clocked the highest speed and was caught travelling at 127km/h in this 60km/h zone.

“The other nine arrested drivers registered speeds of between 102km/h and 113km/h,” said Kgasago.

In total, the EMPD arrested 31 drivers in Brakpan for exceeding the speed limit between Tuesday and Sunday, last week.

“All the arrested drivers were released after paying bail of between R500 and R1 000, and will be appearing soon in the Brakpan Magistrates Court, to face charges of reckless and negligent driving,” added Kgasago.
